What Christian woman doesn’t want a better prayer life?

We are relationship-orientated creatures to begin with and we crave the relationship with our Creator and Lord most of all.

Yet, somehow the precious time of communication with God is often pushed to the side when it is what we need the most in our busy, frustrating, crazy lives.

Honestly, I wish I could say that my prayer life was so much better when I was single with no husband or kids threatening every quiet moment of my life but that was not the case.

Yes, I had the opportunity for many more quiet times with God but I failed to take them. (Oh, how I regret those times now that I don’t have them.)

If anything, the more crazy my life has become, the more dedicated I have had to be to making time in my day for prayer.

Along the way, I have found several resources to be helpful and I wanted to share those resources with you.

Keep in mind that these are meant to supplement and help you along, they are not to replace your time in the Scripture or your prayer time. And, as always, remember that the best way to grow in your prayer life is to just pray!

But for those looking to keep growing in their prayer walk with God, try checking these out! 🙂

Wrestling Prayer: A Passionate Communion with God by Eric and Leslie Ludy

My all-time favorite book that has encouraged me to grow in my prayer life is Wrestling Prayer: A Passionate Communion with God by Eric and Leslie Ludy.

Personally, this book challenged me to even make prayer a part of my life. I read this book during college and it was the catalyst that I needed to make prayer a priority in my Christian faith.

Honestly, I have prayed my whole life growing up in a Christian home but this book showed me how to approach God’s throne boldly and to ask God to do the impossible.

In a world of prosperity gospel prayers and feel-good prayer books, this book rose above the crowd and built in my the desire to pray for God’s will to be done and for God to be glorified in HUGE ways and in little details.

If you want a book to give you the first glimpses at what Christian prayer should look like or if you need something to refuel your already active prayer life-Wrestling Prayer: A Passionate Communion with God is the book!

As a caveat, I will say, my husband cannot stand this book. Their writing style alone drove him crazy. So, before purchasing it, check it out from your library or at least read a small sample on Amazon to be sure that you like their writing style.

That being said, you should totally ready this book! 🙂

The Armor of God Bible Study by Priscilla Shirer

This past several months, the Bible study group I am a part of completed this study together.

It’s intense. We had two weeks to complete each week worth of homework and I still sometimes didn’t get it all done because she has such amazing, thought-provoking, actionable questions and activities jammed into this one book!

But let me tell you, it has infused my prayer life with a new vigor and I feel prepared me to fight spiritual battles that before I would have cowered to (or not even perceived to be spiritual battles in my life!)

Find a group of Christian gals or simply do it on your own time, but take the time to work through The Armor of God.

The Power of a Praying® Wife by Stormie Omartian

This is a whole series of books that are designed to help woman in different seasons of life to build their prayer life.

My first time through the The Power of a Praying® Woman, I put the book down. For some reason, I really struggled to get through it. It seemed slow and tedious.

However, after getting married, I decided to give The Power of a Praying® Wife a try and found myself pleasantly surprised. While this will never be my top pick, I do find that all of her books are helpful for daily getting myself geared to pray specific prayers and to focus my heart on God rather than all the distractions going on around me.

And while, I find her books to be a little slow, I have several Christian momma friends that love her books for just that reason! So, again, this is a matter of personal preference, check it out before purchasing to make sure that it will be a good fit for you!

The Complete Works of E. M. Bounds on Prayer

Please do NOT let the thickness of this book (or the small print) scare you away!! If ever a person could be said to literally having written the book on prayer, it is E. M. Bounds!

This is a set of seven books compiled into one that was written by a Civil War era preacher. I have learned more about Biblical prayer, what it looks like, what it doesn’t look like, the importance of prayer, etc. from this book than other human book ever.

If you are a serious student of wanting to grow your prayer life, please do yourself the service of reading The Complete Works of E. M. Bounds on Prayer.

That being said, if you are a beginner to prayer as a new believer or such, I might suggest you start with some other books first. This is a book that will definitely deepen your walk with God through prayer but it was not one that I would recommend for you to start with!

Check out the other resources I mentioned first before proceeding to this one! 🙂

That being said, it is worth the months of tedious reading of small print, to glean a great wealth for the power and beauty of prayer!

Biographies of great Christian Prayer Warriors such as George Muller, Corrie ten Boom, and Amy Carmichael

Finally, I would be remiss if I didn’t tell you that a huge catalyst to my faith and prayer life has been the biographies of great Christian prayer warriors. The most notable of these biographies is for the man George Muller. Over the course of his lifetime, he recorded over 10,000 answered prayers. Prayer infused his daily life of keeping his orphanages open and the children fed.

Other notable Christians who had strong prayer lives include Amy Carmichael, Corrie ten Boom, Gladys Aylward, and Oswald Chambers.

Your Turn

Drawing close to God in prayer is simply an amazing privilege that we have as Christian women! I don’t know about you but I want to continue to grow in that area of my spiritual life each and every day!

Please leave a comment and share what resources have helped guide your prayer life the most!
