Two things have connected my husband and I since day one of knowing each other.

Books and Christian apologetics.

While repainting a room in our basement, we listened to Frank Turek’s Cross Examined podcast. (Definitely something you should look into if you like podcasts!) In this particular episode, Mr. Turek was interviewing Hillary Morgan Ferrer. She was sharing about her new book called Mama Bear Apologetics™: Empowering Your Kids to Challenge Cultural Lies.

From the second I heard the title, I admit that I wanted that book!

Two days later, I was opening an Amazon box expecting to see the usual supplies that my husband orders for our household use. Inside was a copy of Mama Bear Apologetics. Let me tell you that my heart might have skipped a couple of beats. The man still knows how woo me. 😉

My Book Review of Mama Bear Apologetics

With three kids ages three and under, my reading time has dwindled down from what it previously was. Therefore, I must admit I am incredibly picky about what I choose to read. If I am not 90% certain it is a book that I will benefit from, I just skip it. So, let me tell you, the premise of this book alone put me over the 90% certain mark which makes it special!

What I Loved About Mama Bear Apologetics

Here is a quick run down of the best aspects about Mama Bear Apologetics

Communicates Big Ideas Well

Let’s be honest. Some philosophies and ideas are big and hard to wrap our tired mom brains around. Throughout Mama Bear Apologetics, they give you an easy-to-understand overview of each topic they cover. At the end of the book, the authors point you to several pages worth of resources that will help you if you want to gain a better understanding beyond the basics that they cover.

Informs You About So Many Topics

Progressive Christianity. Feminism. Communism. New Spirituality. Naturalism. These are just a few of the many, many topics Mama Bear Apologetics covers. If you have heard of an issue (or never even had it on your radar) this book will likely discuss it.

Shares Loving Criticism

Many people picture angry Christians who are against everything. What Mama Bear Apologetics does exceptionally well is pointing out the good behind these bad ideologies and worldviews. The authors do show genuine areas of concern that need to be addressed by Christians. Then they proceed to show how the world’s responses have fallen short and why Christians can provide a better Biblical response.

Provides Actionable Steps

Just because you may know more about the big issues facing your kids today doesn’t mean you will know what to do with that knowledge. Each of the several authors of this book give great actionable points and questions. Whether your kids are still using sippy cups or packing up to head out the door to college, this book will help you take action to counter the culture’s ambush on your kids.

Stands Firm On The Bible

In our world, the Bible is often questioned. (Yes, even by Christians-check out the Progressive Christianity chapter to find out more!) Throughout the entirety of this book the Mama Bear authors successfully point back to the authority of Scripture and to the sovereignty of God over these bad ideas that are taking hold of our culture.

Easy To Read Chapters

Each chapter is broken up to be easily read and referenced again later. Personally, if I could recommend three chapters in this book it would be the Linguistic Theft, New Spirituality, and Progressive Christianity chapters. Those three chapters alone made this book worth every penny to me!

Designed With Moms In Mind

If truth were told, I spend 25% of my waking hours dealing with Mom Brain. I go to grab some item I need from another room, get interrupted, and surprisingly can’t remember what I was originally intending to do. Or I hide stuff in a safe place where I would never forget it only to never be able to remember where that was.

As moms, we have a lot on our brains so it makes it hard to remember new information. Which is why I love the acronym of ROAR taught throughout this book. It is easily remembered and provides me with a memory tool that even my foggy mama bear brain can work with! 🙂

The Most Unexpected Aspect Of Reading This Book

There was not much of a struggle with this book other than I was sad it was finished. 🙂 However, I will state that this book is written with moms in mind. How they handle hard topics is in a very relational based way. By that, I mean they do not dive into the political side of the debates much. Nor do they discuss how to handle these topics in broader venues as much. Their goal is to equip Mama Bears to train their children to recognize and refute bad ideas with Biblical worldviews.

This book is not geared to train you to talk to a professor so much as it is aimed to help your kids recognize the ideas they might encounter every single day. (Of course, you can still use this information in a less “relational” based way but that is not the goal of this book.)

Keep this in mind. The authors of Mama Bear Apologetics state several times in the book that you are demolish arguments-not people. However some people are simply so connected to their arguments that they will still deem it a personal attack when you point out flaws in their reasoning and logic.

Honestly, most apologetic books don’t take quite as a relational approach simply because they are teaching the pros and cons of these thought patterns. Mama Bear Apologetics has a unique and fresh approach to apologetics simply because they do keep it relational. So while it was a little different of a read from most apologetics books, it was actually the most refreshing part of this book as well.

Why I Think Every Mom Needs To Read Mama Bear Apologetics

Look at the world we live in. Your kids are being attacked on all sides with worldviews. You are too and you may not even realize it. Each day you face many of these worldviews just as you go through your normal activities.

Mama Bear Apologetics does a great job of helping you stop and recognize the false messages that are bombarding your heart and mind and affecting your soul. More importantly, you will be trained to help equip your kids as well.

This book has earned a top spot on my personal list of Christian parenting books simply because it does such an astoundingly great job at communicating difficult ideas well. Get this book, read it, reference it, use it to talk with your kids, give it to your mom friends. It is time we as Christians take our every thought captive to the honor and glory of God.
