As the local librarian in our small town, my husband gets to make all the purchasing orders for books at the library. (Yeah, I kind of think he has the coolest job EVER!)

As we get closer to Christmas, he always finds himself frustrated when trying to find a balance of new Christmas books. You see, pretty much every single new book advertised about Christmas has to do with Santa Claus. It takes some serious digging to find a new children’s Christmas book that is about Jesus.

Now that we have two kids of our own, we are always hunting for Christmas books that will focus on Jesus’ birth. Over the past three years, we have found several and I thought I would share these with you today!

Christmas Books For Kids That Focus On Jesus

While I have read most of these personally, there are a few Christmas books listed that I haven’t had a chance to see. I decided to include them as well because they have come recommended from other Christian moms who have been on the same search for Christ-centered Christmas books.

Here are 25 Christmas books that you can read together with your kids this Christmas season!

God Gave Us Christmas

This sweet little polar bear cub has lots of questions about Christmas and keeps Mama Bear busy answering those questions! 🙂

Who is Coming to Our House?

A sturdy little board book that contains the story of the animals preparing for “someone” who is coming to visit them. A great way to talk to your kids about preparing to celebrate Jesus birth too.

The Crippled Lamb

Max Lucado wrote this charming story of a little lamb who has his prayers answered in great big ways!

The Legend of the Candy Cane

Savor this sweet story that provides a reminder to your kids of why Jesus was born. It doesn’t hurt to have some candy canes on hand to enjoy while reading it either! 🙂

God Bless Our Christmas

A beautifully illustrated book from the God Bless series that reminds your children of the real reason for the season. And it gets a huge bonus in our family because my daughter loves the penguin. (It’s the simple things, folks!)

The Christmas Promise

Learn how God keeps His promises by sending a forever King!

Itsy Bitsy Christmas: You’re Never Too Little for His Love

Another Christmas story from Max Lucado where two mice learn about God’s love.

One Wintry Night

Ruth Bell Graham’s classic story for children that illustrates how Christmas is linked from the beginning of Creation through the Resurrection of Jesus.

The Christmas Story

This is a Golden Book classic that I read as a child and now love to read to my kids. It is simple and to the point!

Goodnight, Manger

A story about the noisy manger scene and how his mother just wants to help baby Jesus fall asleep. Cute and slightly different from other manger stories.

One Small Donkey for Little Ones

God may not have made the donkey to be bigger, faster, or stronger than the other animals but He still had an important job for this one small donkey!

The Tale of Three Trees

Growing up, my family always read this story around Christmas time but I think it really is more of an Easter story told with Christmas in mind. Either way, it helps your child grasp the connection between Easter and Christmas!

The Very First Christmas

Okay, here is one that I have not personally read but hope to soon. Basically, the author is telling the Christmas story with a archaeological and historical perspective. It truly sounds unique which is why I think this book needed to be on this list. (I will update you once I get a chance to see it first hand.)

The Stable Cat’s Christmas

This adorable barn kitty learns that giving of yourself to Jesus is the best gift you can give.

The Action Bible Christmas Story

The Action Bible Christmas story is great for boys especially. The link that I am sharing is actually to a pack of 25 so you can share with a Sunday School, use as stocking stuffers or pack into Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes too.

The Animals’ Christmas Eve

You would think kids would get tired of the story through the animal’s eyes but they don’t! This is by far my daughter’s favorite. She loves counting the animals and retelling the story to her little brother just by looking at the pictures!

Humphrey’s First Christmas

One humorous camel’s point of view of the first Christmas.

Room for a Little One: A Christmas Tale

A sweet, beautifully illustrated tale of the Christmas story. The art work alone makes it a perfect for my kids to flip through and enjoy even when I am not around to read it.

‘Twas the Evening of Christmas

Told in the same poetic cadence as Twas the Night Before Christmas, the author shares the story of the Christ’s birth.

A Birthday Party for Jesus

Christmas isn’t about gifts or Santa Claus or any number of other things that the world says it is about. Christmas is about celebrating the birth of of Jesus. Let this book serve as a springboard to help your kids celebrate this amazing season!

Christmas in the Manger

A simple board book that introduces the youngest members of your family to the Christmas story.

The Berenstain Bears, The Very First Christmas

If you are fans of the Berenstain Bears, your kids will adore this books about the first Christmas as Brother and Sister Bear learn it. The only quick warning I will give is that this is a part of their bigger Berenstain Bears Bible so if you have that Bible, you won’t need to purchase this book separate!

Where Jesus Slept

A rhythm and rhyme book about the manger scene. Wonderfully to help them connect all the little details of the Christmas story.

The Berenstain Bears and the Joy of Giving

Brother and Sister Bear have to discover the joy of giving as they learn about the Christmas story. Great story with a lesson for everyone during the season of giving.

Jesus Calling: The Story of Christmas

Key points from throughout the Bible help your child to learn more about the story of Christmas in its entirety. Again, here is one that I have not personally read yet. However, it has come highly recommended for an excellent resource to teach the whole story of Christmas to your child.

Bonus Book To Check Out

The Advent Storybook: 25 Bible Stories Showing Why Jesus Came

Okay, perhaps the idea of borrowing 25 books from the library or purchasing 25 books seems a bit too overwhelming for this year’s Christmas.

If that is the case, then there is a relatively new resource that I just unearthed and wanted to share with you too!

Within the pages of this one book is 25 days worth of Christ-centered stories to prepare your heart for the celebration of Jesus being born on earth! So, if you are looking to focus on Christ but only want to invest in one book, this might be the one worth your investment.
