With the beginning of a new year about to dawn, we can enjoy letting our minds wander over all the possibilities this new chapter holds. Think about the many dreams you want to see turned into realities!

However, like me, you are also facing reality. Within a few weeks of the new year starting, I will officially become a mom to three kids ages three and under. Certain dreams will definitely come true but others will just not be possible this year.

This is just a symptom of this season of young motherhood.

As we envision setting spiritual goals for this next year, let’s do so in the reality of what our life (and sleep schedule!) will probably look like.

The Importance Of Our Spiritual Life

If there is one area of my life that I know I don’t want to grow shallow, it is my spiritual life.

With young children who demand so much of their mother, I know that pouring back into my spiritual bucket is a must if I want to be the mom God calls me to be.  Same goes for being the wife, friend, homemaker, business owner, Sunday School teacher, and all the other hats that I end up wearing over the course of normal daily life.

No matter what season you are in, I am sure there are ways you are wanting to grow spiritually over this next year.

What Is A Spiritual Goal?

Until just a few years ago, I have never heard of this idea of setting spiritual goals. Now, I can’t imagine what my spiritual life would look like if I hadn’t! God has used this exercise of setting spiritual goals to draw me into a deeper, more intimate relationship with Him.

Basically, spiritual goals are land mark moments in your Christian faith where you wanting to see growth. As Christians, we never stop growing in our walk with God. There is always going to be some new area that God will be showing us where we need to surrender to Him and draw closer to Him.

Spiritual goals just make it possible for us to be intentional about growing spiritually.

I truly believe God will help you grow closer to Him as you set intentional and attainable spiritual goals for your Christian walk.

Why Christian Women Need To Be Setting Spiritual Goals

In this world, we deal with a lot of noise and even more demands on our time. As we grow and go through life, we start to realize that we can’t be Superwoman. There is only so many things we can fit in a 24 hour period and still be a functioning human.

As we learn to say no and cut out activities that aren’t necessary, we need to make sure that we are filling the time we do have with worth-while and valuable actions. Most of all, we need to focus on our walk with God and keep it as the priority that it should be in our lives!

Spiritual goals help make it possible for us to do just that.

Spiritual Goals Teach Us To Make Good Use Of The Days God Gives Us

In the Bible, God calls us to number our days.

Think about this for just a moment. If you live an average life span, you might make it to 80.  That might sound like a long time but in the grand scheme of history, that is a very short blink of time.

God doesn’t want us to squander the precious resource of time that He gives us. Spiritual goals train us to be intentional and make good use of this quick dash of a life on this planet.

Spiritual Goals Help Us To Grow Into Spiritually Mature Christians

The Apostle Paul makes it clear that God doesn’t want us to stay spiritual babies. But how are Christians supposed to mature in their faith?

Spiritual goals inspired and led by the Holy Spirit will help us take those next wobbly steps as we move away from spiritual babyhood.

No one wants to be the Christian that has said they were a Christian for 50 years yet still struggles to even flip through their Bible or say an awkward prayer.

We want to be the Christians that are like Corrie ten Boom, E.M. Bounds and Oswald Chambers. They were not satisfied in living an easy Christian life but instead delved into growing their relationship with God to maturity.

You can be certain spiritual maturity does not happen by accident. Intentional, daily action is necessary to stretch our faith to maturity.

Spiritual Goals Make Use Of The Spiritual Gifts God Gives Us

As Christians, God has given us each our own special and unique gifts and talents. Even more wonderful is the fact that He has planned out good works in advance for us to do with these gifts!

As we set spiritual goals, we must keep in mind how we can use the unique talents that God has given us. Setting spirituals goals is not just about helping us grow, it is also about helping us serve God and others well.

When we are intentional in our decision to use what God has given us, we will find that our witness for Christ will be allowed to grow and expand in new and exciting ways.

Spiritual Goals Serve To Remind Us Of God’s Truth In Our Lives

Pretty much every writer on the books of the Bible says the reason they write is to remind believers of God’s truth.

We are forgetful creatures. Especially when busy lives make our brains turn to mush. As we rush about dealing with the most urgent needs of the day, it is easy to push aside and forget the truth that God would have us remember.

As we forget God’s truth, we become more and more vulnerable to the enemy’s attack on our hearts, minds, and souls. Setting spiritual goals that keep us close to God and His Word will serve to remind us of the truth we so desperately need to survive life in this broken and sinful world.

Spiritual Goals Help Us Track Where We Want To Grow With God

Have you ever walked through freshly fallen snow and looked behind you? The snow served to mark every step you had taken.

Spiritual goals are kind of like that snow. They allow us to see how far we have come. If you are anything like me, it is easy to assume no growth is happening when life is just going along. Of course there are high and low moments but often we get in our routines and fail to see how God is using those times to grow us too.

Spiritual goals will not only help us to see where we need to walk next but where we have come from. When Satan whispers lies to us about our relationship with God, we can point to where God has brought us from. Also, we can point to where He is currently taking us.

Spiritual Goals Remind Us Of God’s Calling On Our Lives

If you are breathing (and I am assuming you are since you are reading this), then God has a plan for your life.

Setting spiritual goals can help us to stay focused on God’s calling for us in every season of life. Most of all, they remind that we do have a purpose. We are not just stumbling around hoping to make some small difference by accident.

Instead, we are trusting God with our intentional decisions to live out His grace in the area of life we are currently placed in.
