Book Review: Too Good To Be False by Tom Gilson

Being a Christian blogger comes with certain perks. One of those perks is getting to occasionally join launch teams for books. As a book worm who is always looking forward to my next book to read, I love the job of getting to read pre-released manuscripts! Too Good to Be False caught my eye and attention recently. When I had the opportunity to join the launch team, I was thrilled.

It took longer than I care to admit for me to sit down and actually read the book. Once I got started, setting the book down was hard. (It is always a good sign when a book keeps me awake late into the night!)

My Thoughts On Too Good to Be False

First, my thoughts on this book were cautions to begin with. I admit, I had never heard of the author before this book. (Now I am looking forward to reading many more books by him!)

The Best of  Too Good To Be False

When someone takes on the challenge to write about Jesus in such an in-depth manner, it usually means I will use a lot more scrutiny to ensure what I am reading lines up with who Jesus really was in the pages of Scripture. This book was worth the scrutiny because it held up well!

A Side Note About Relationships

If I am being honest, I tend to take relationships for granted over time. For instance, when my husband and I were first married, I bragged on him, praised him and stared at him cause I couldn’t believe how blessed I was to land such an amazing guy. As time went by, I forgot how amazing he was for doing what he does faithfully every.single.day. A couple of years into marriage and he expressed that he wondered if I was even grateful for him anymore. I was blown away. Of course I was grateful! But I had stopped expressing it or thinking about my blessings. My lack of expressing my gratefulness showed up in our relationship pretty quickly.

My Relationship With Jesus

The same goes for my Christian relationship with Jesus. He is my Savior and the Lord of my life. Everything I have or am or will ever be is due to His love and sacrifice on the cross for me. When I was in high school and college and my faith was fresh and exciting, I bragged about how amazing Jesus was to complete strangers in the street. I wore shirts that proclaimed Christ’s love. My mornings were not complete unless I was reading my Bible and soaking up a deep quiet prayer time with Him where I spent much time just singing and speaking words of praise. Those were the honeymoon years of my faith. I loved Jesus and there was no hiding it. People thought I was crazy and over the top but I did not care. There was no hiding how amazing Jesus was!

As the years passed, that changed. Apathy has set in. I have heard the sermons and quotes over and over again. Jesus has become so familiar to me that I kind of forget how amazing He really is. My mind has stopped registering how wonderful He really is. Of course I still love Him and acknowledge the gift of eternal life in heaven that He provided me. But the relationship end of knowing Jesus grows stale because I tend to think I know all there is to know.

Now Back To Too Good To Be False

Too Good to Be False totally shook me up. This book helped me to reopen my eyes to how awe-inspiring and unbelievably wonderful my Savior is!

If you read nothing more of this book, read the first section of chapters under Greater Than You Ever Knew. As a Christian who has grown a little too used to Jesus and all the common phrases about Him, this section blew me away.

You will find yourself overwhelmed by how truly loving Jesus was, how His brilliance will forever go unmatched, how incredible his voice of authority changed the world, and much more.

The rest of the book was good and built some wonderful apologetic information for Christians to know and have in their toolkit. I highly recommend the whole book but please, please, please read the first section  of chapters. It will do so much to open your eyes and your heart.

Why You Should Read Too Good To Be False

Well, for starters, worshiping Jesus and loving Him with renewed vigor. I am so thankful that God prompted this book to be written and placed in the hands of Christians. We need to know who Jesus truly is now more than ever!

Next, studying the Bible and regaining an even deeper understanding for who Jesus was in the pages of His Word. Bible study time certainly becomes deeper and more intimate when we you have a renewed grasp of Who you are reading about and what He did for you.

Finally, recommending Too Good to Be False to other Christians. Now, I could have just written a quick Goodreads post about this book and called it done but this book is too good for that. It needed a whole post dedicated to it. Please read this book. After you have read it, pass along your recommendation of it to other Christian friends. They need to hear this message too!
